Book book! Readit readit!

Well! Don't Buy Any Books Month was a bit of a flop.

Out of the four books I managed to read in January, YOU MUST READ Alexander Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, an account of life in a Soviet labour camp. It's very short, very readable, and there's very little actual brutality or violence - and yet it's a nightmare. The last lines nearly did away with me.

I recently signed up for the Science Fiction Book Club.

I am so doomed.

One Day in the Life ......

ABC Radio National repeated "Works of art that changed history: One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" over the summer, so it's still available to listen online or download.

(I didn't listen to it, because I haven't read the book yet, so I don't know if it's any good; but I mention it in case you're interested.)

Oh Lord I bought 10. Most of them second hand.
They include (for the curious)
Doris Lessing On Cats
P.J. Stephenson The history and description of Sydney Harbour
Lilith Norman A Dream of Seas
Bill Scott Following the gold (a book of poems, with a dedication to Patsy Adam-Smith, from Bill).
Australian Cicadas the only published book on the subject, and one that needs a new edition.

I read that book when I was 13. It gave me a lot to think about. Nightmares.
