I think for once we have a Doctor who listens to fan suggestions (especially if you've seen what he's worn since then) because in the Doctor Who Magazine, someone (Neil Harris) sent in a list of stuff for him to do/remember as a 'welcome to the TARDIS' type thing. And number eight was...
"8. Your costume as the Doctor is very important, but before it's decided what you should wear - why not have a bit of fun? I suggest you parade around in public wearing a Mad Hatter's hat with a question mark on one side and a multi-coloured shell suit with a radish sticking nonchalantly out of the breast pocket. People will think this will be your new costume and it will really freak them out."
