Frank has pancreatitis. The vet says this can happen without any obvious cause, and is likely to sort itself out with our needing to do anything more than keep him hydrated etc. She wants to keep him in the hospital for 48 hours. The problem is that he's supposed to go to the cattery on Monday, for ten days, and there's no way to know if he'll be well enough in time. Even if he is, I don't know whether he might have a relapse during that time. This is going to be an interesting couple of days. I better go look at my travel insurance details.

speaking as a fellow sufferer with a wonky gallbladder, tell frankus he has my full sympathies. *snuzzles him*

if he has a relapse, won't the cattery people be able to deal with it? do they have his vet's number? they should be able to call you/the vet if something comes up and give him appropriate treatment. (which, of course, does nothing at all to soothe your nerves, or your desire to be with him while he's ill, but might still allow your travel plans to go ahead unconflicted)

What's going to happen is that I'm going to have to go on this bloody trip whether or not Frank is well enough, and somehow, I'm going to have to coordinate his movement from the kitty hospital in North Ryde to the cattery in Annangrove, approximately a billion miles away, and possibly back again. The whole thing is going to cost a fortune - it already has - and isn't covered by his pet insurance because he's too old. I'm just allowing myself to have a really good panic and weep about the whole thing right now.

That sounds possible. *epichugs*

aw, man, i'm so sorry it's stressing you out so bad. *hugs* surely they'll let you call the cattery while you're on the trip to check on him? maybe even talk to him? (just imagine his face on hearing you over the phone)

and yeah, the cost...the only thing i can say about the expense is what i always tell myself when miyuki runs up an unpayable vet bill: you can always get more money; you can never get another frankus. so, totally worth it. :)

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
We can afford it. We're always worried about money, but the truth is, we're really all right. This is just one more thing on top of everything else. And omg, Q, he was so not himself. He's in pain and he's nauseated and he's miserable, and I'm not going to have any choice but to go away and leave him on his own. I have to stop crying now because otherwise I'm going to throw up.

yikes! bless his heart - yeah, it's awful when they feel bad and there's not much you can do but hold them and pet them and wait it out.

and bless your heart, too - worrying and emotional turmoil are, sadly, the price we pay for loving the fluffy lil' critters (but, again - very worth it). and if you need to cry, cry. as much as you need to. remember: bad emotions, like farts, are always better out than in.

Yah, but my breakfast, not so much...

All right, have calmed down now and Decided. Frank will stay at the small animal hospital until he's quite well, whether that takes a day or a week or more. Then I'll either get the cattery to pick him up, or I'll get our usual vet to board him, for waaay less than the boarding fee at the hospital. If necessary I can coordinate all this by mobile phone and email while we're in NZ. Fuck the expense: the government is apparently going to give me a thousand bucks in April, and there's no better way to spend it.

Man, it's rough when the small, furry family members are sick -- adding travel on top of that makes it even worse. Best wishes to all!

that's the spirit - hooray for Deciding! s'truth, they is expensive, them wee bundles of fluff, but lo, they is worth it.

Poor Kitty. :( And poor Kate & Jon. :( And poor Tim. :( Hang in there, all of you!

Oh, Tim is perfectly happy, the little draft excluder.

It's the Australian stimulus package. I'll believe it when I see it! :)

Oh, hell, bugger and shite. Poor Frankus. Do give him my love when you can.

I know you're feeling better by the time I post this, but I offer HUGS anyway, because it's terrible to see the fuzzy ones in pain and distress and having no choice but to leave them with strangers. Jack's little scare last year was terrible.
