The definition of a 'mad scientist', as I understand it, is one who does things in the name of gaining knowledge, but doesn't consider (or doesn't care) that there might be negative consequences. Why don't people get as riled up about mad artists or mad businessmen? (I love The Truman Show because it's a movie where the villain is a mad artist who precisely fits that definition.)
