Red-Handed is away. I emerge from the rubble, blinking in the light.

Welcome back and congrats. :)

Say, may I ask you a question? When you start something like this, do you know how the story is going to end, do you plan it through, or do you have a premise and start to see how it all plays out? (Me, I'm the latter writer, and get frustrated sometimes by it, but on the other hand it is a lot more difficult for me to know the ending before I start to write, as finding out is more than half the fun.)

For a commissioned story, me and the editor have already agreed on a fairly detailed outline, and I stick pretty closely to that (if I remember to keep checking it - otherwise I go wandering off and get hopelessly tangled up!). But there's still a huge element of improvisation in putting the flesh on those bones. I threw in a bit of tech at the start of Red-Handed which ended up being instrumental in the story's climax and its resolution, and that tech isn't even mentioned in the outline!
