Secret Service visits LJer, who responds with enormous grace under pressure.
I don't think this has anything to do with Bush, or the Patriot Act. You'll recall the case of the 15 year old whose art class sketch of Bush's head on a pike resulted in a Secret Service investigation. If I understand correctly from what was reported then, the Secret Service must investigate any threat against the Prez that's reported to them, however unlikely. (How turning up on someone's doorstep counts as "investigating" and not "intimidation", I don't know.)
That said: it *does* have to do with Bush and the Patriot Act. The LJer who reported the posting may have been affected by the climate of fear and suspicion that President and that law have instilled into the country. More likely, they were operating out of the freedom-hating, mean-spirited, anything-goes, desperate viciousness that has Bush supporters stealing Kerry lawn signs across the nation.
I don't want violence against Bush. I want a fair vote which kicks him out on his butt so he becomes an embarrassing footnote to history, like Millard Fillmore.
ETA: said LJer clarifies confusion over her posting.

(Anonymous) 2004-10-28 02:31 am (UTC)(link)Question: we've got Bonfire Night coming up in the UK, a night on which we burn effigies of public hate figures. Back in the 80s, Thatcher was very popular (as a hate figure). Should our internal security forces have investigated every report of someone burning her effigy, given that the action was a joke designed as a release of personal political tension but could be construed as wanting her dead? And, before bringing up the fact that American Presidents have been assassinated, so has a British Prime Minister (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer_Perceval). And people have taken shots at the Queen and the Pope.
