It's odd to characterise this as the creation of new terms to categorise fannish behaviour, when in fact the terms arose organically from fandom and have been around for decades. From what I've been able to gather, fanboy was a putdown referring to immaturity; fangirl arose later as a partial parallel. Neither began as attempts to categorise fans or their behaviour.
