At the end of the drive / the lawmen arrive

Now this Gene Hunt thing is not, thank heavens, one of those soul-devouring manic obsessions to which I am prone, the ones where I think I'm in love with God. It's merely lust. Much less exhausting.

I first encountered Mr Glenister in Hornblower, wherein I did note his extraordinary eyes, although I was a little distracted at the time by Mr McGann. As for DCI Hunt, I fell in love with the character the moment I saw that hysterical driving-down-the-alley-backwards scene, but didn't realise this had evolved into a flange until I realised I'd become strangely obsessed with Gene's gloves.

Mr Glenister is certainly handsome enough (and does have those eyes), but he's far from my normal type. What is it about the character that appeals? Presumably it's Gene's combination of hilarously unreconstructed masculinity, contrasting with his intelligence and sharp sense of humour. Definitely the sense of humour. He makes me fall off the sofa laughing.

Hilariously, our rent-DVDs-by-mail thing just coughed up the first episodes of The Sweeney. ETA: Even better, the Commissioner misses the good old days of the 1950s, when policemen were rugged individualists unconstrained by soft new-fangled ideas.

"If I was creating the world I wouldn't mess about with butterflies and daffodils, Hobbs."
"No, sir."

Eyes right, people.

Queues! How I love them! (Hornblower grabs by [livejournal.com profile] addygryff.)

Small role in Inspector Wexford, 1991, age 28 (grabs by [livejournal.com profile] jaceybatts).

(Naughty!)

I swear this man never smiles. Even for the CBeebies bedtime story he only managed half of one.

watch the life on mars outtakes - he actually laughs.

Aww, i love that 90s hairdo.

The Gene Genie rules :D

Right. I gotta watch me some Hornblower.

[identity profile] angriest.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
I was sold on Hunt as a character from his first scene. He's just such a glorious bastard.

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
The cast is incredible. As I have sometimes remarked, watching it is like eating a whole box of chocolates at once.

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's true! The one where he announces "HE CAN'T REMEMBER THE LINE" through the megaphone required use of the Pause button while I recovered myself.

I have to admit to getting quite a lot of entertainment (possibly more than it's worth) by watching an episode of Life on Mars followed by one of The Sweeney. If for nothing else than to compare the Gene Genie to Young Inspector Frost in the "sex symbol" stakes.

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if there's a bizarre parallel with my love of violent goddesses and superheroines - "I would so do that if I could get away with it." :-)

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
An anachronism in Life on Mars is the general attractiveness of the cast. Ray and Chris try their best to look horrible, but even minor characters in The Sweeney out-hideous them by miles.

(I cannot believe how young Dennis Waterman is. I wasn't even sure I'd recognised him!)

But I can't help it, my eyes wander over to the left!

Not quiet my type, too much testosteron in the air, but my god: he really has beautiful lips. Didn't know he was in Hornblower as well. Guess it's time for a rewatch.

He's so pouty.

Again, I must ask, since nobody ever answers this question, what is it about The Sweeney that makes some feel it's a kind of ancestor to The Shield?

[identity profile] bluetyson.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Armed Bastard, thank you very much.

:)

Blimey - how young he looks in 91!!! I tend to forget that he was once a youngster, because all the stuff I've seen (and loved) him in is from the 8 or 9 years.

[identity profile] queeniefox.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only woman who finds Gene Hunt remarkably unatractive because of his personality?

Leaves you answered with a question more

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
What is The Shield?

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd sort him out.

[identity profile] murasaki-1966.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
And the ships are really nice. I like tall ships.

The Shield is a police version of Oz. Violent, confronting and very good. However, i've only got through one episode.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shield

[identity profile] murasaki-1966.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I also find him repulsive because of his personality. I have had to deal with men like that. I tend to avoid them like the plague.

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
... there were ships?

[identity profile] murasaki-1966.livejournal.com 2007-08-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Big ones with sails. I wasn't watching it for the fellas. Although Hornblower was rather dishy.

Oh yeah, the cast are far, far too attractive in Life on Mars. And their teeth are nearly all perfect!

And my God, how hairy are some of these blokes...

Dennis Waterman - having seen pretty much all of Minder before I'd ever laid eyes on The Sweeney I kept expecting his character to turn out to be corrupt. Even so, he is still a much more believable sex symbol than John Thaw, who appears to be far too old to be the character he's playing even at that stage (from memory another character comments on it too, something about "you look really aged for a 38 year old".)

Actually, while I'm rambling on about The Sweeney do you find the episode endings frequently really abrupt? They just cut off, without any kind of wrap up.

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think I see what you mean - no denouement.

Adult oriented cop show on FX, heading for its 7th and final season, stars Michael Chiklis as the head of an LAPD anti-gang unit called Strike Team. Thing is, Vic Mackey, Chiklis' character, is also dirty as Hell, i.e. shooting his partner (played by Reed Diamond from Homicide) dead when he was going to turn him over to the Feds in the pilot episode, as well as other antics as heisting the Armenian mob for half a mil.

Probably my favorite drama show outside of Doctor Who.
