OK, lemme see. Under "Word of God" in the Anchor Bible Dictionary we get several pages on the Hebrew dabar, "the word of God", meaning: communications from God via speech but also through dreams, visions, and other routes; the creative power of God's words; and the expression of God's will. (I think the latter two are something like the Greek concept of the logos, though it's not mentioned.)

דבר is properly pronounced "davar" (v's often get translated as b's by Christian scholars, so as to differentiate between the vav and the vet - thus avraham => abraham and avshalom => absalom).

דבר means "word" or "thing" and the most prominent example of the Biblical usage is the Hebrew name for the book of Deuteronomy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deuteronomy)- although the wiki there makes it appear that the only translation of the first sentence is "...words..." you could also render it as "These are the things Moses said..." although "words" works better in English (and is the more common rendering there).

Basically, דבר is a very common word, which gets used for lots of things both lofty and less so. As a side note, think about the name "Deborah" - דְּבוֹרָה - her name literally means "bee" but it's obviously from the same root.
