Via Lloyd, a thought-provoking remark from Hugh Laurie, I think originally from an interview in Rolling Stone: "I hate being looked at. I hate being photographed. I have this weird superstition about the camera stealing part of your soul... if the photographer has something, you must have lost something. And the idea that any image of you will be looked at and distributed and pored over and commented on is depressing. You feel intruded upon."

That's a pretty peculiar line of thought for someone who gets filmed by TV cameras for a living.

::nods:: I understand what he means.

Wonder if he's ever stumbled across any House X-rated fanfic, though -- man, if he thinks photos are scary!!

I've never understood that. I like being photographed. But then, it doesn't happen as much to me!

Hugh Laurie battles depression--no secret--and I find his statement interesting. I have a friend who also wrestles with depression, and at times, she gets all self-conscious in public and thinks that people are looking at her in a negative way. I always say, "On the whole, people look at other people less than you think, and most of the time, ordinary people don't even register a blip on their consciousness. There's a lot less judgment going on by strangers than you imagine."

Hugh Laurie, on the other hand, is stuck as a famous celebrity and even worse, as a subject of tabloid speculation. I can only imagine how much worse he feels when his natural shyness or paranoia--ends up not being paranoid at all.

If there were any message I'd wish for him to have, it would be that any fan or anti-fan knows less about him than his milkman, and clutching his photo no more gives them a piece of his soul than it gives them an iota of his acting talent. :P
