MY BAG HAS AN ANGRY

Just ran into my first snag with OpenOffice.org: no "live" word count, ie, no little floating dialogue that you can update for a running total. You can leave the Properties > Statistics dialogue open, but it takes up something like a third of the screen. I've just spent over an hour screwing around cluelessly with macros. What a pain in the butt.

I adore OpenOffice for the most part. Have you checked out the various development forums for patches and things? I gather there are various plug-ins available, although I've just stuck with the basic build thus far.

I didn't even know that such a feat was possible with other word processors.

I haven't dared wade into the dev. forums, though maybe I should...

Allow me to recommend AbiWord. It looks/works like Word a few revisions back (that is, before MSWord became a nightmare). It's free. And like older versions of Word, under the tools menu you'll find your floating word count dialog. And you don't even have to update it. It keeps a running total. You can download dictionaries for it in multiple languages.

It isn't the whole suite like OpenOffice. Just the word processor.
