Gobsmackery

While I may clash a little with Jewish friends and family about the Middle East, I've just been absolutely stunned to read the online remarks of an editor to whose slushpile I had submitted a story, cheering on the indiscriminate killing of civilians in Gaza and calling for their extermination. Whatever disagreements we may have about Israel's policies, media reporting of the situation, etc, I know none of you would ever stoop to advocating the collective punishment of all Palestinians, regardless of their actual innocence or guilt, including children. I've withdrawn the story; I'll give it a rewrite and look for a new home for it. This won't inconvenience the editor in question, who has plenty of stories to choose from; but I don't wish to work with him.

ETA: In fairness to the editor in question, I misread his posting: he calls for the forcible eviction of all Palestinians in Gaza, not their extermination. (In fairness to me, his spluttering responses confirm I made the right decision in choosing not to work with him.)

ETA ETA: Yikes! Sorry about that, folks - I've banned him now.

It's a very small gesture, but EUW.

Absolutely. I don't advocate or condone anyone killing anyone. I don't care about whose history is more full of suffering or whose fault it is. There is one thing we need to learn from history that we never seem to manage; Killing People. Never Good.

I can't imagine any sane person *cheering* over what's going on in the Middle East right now. :P

Definitely not. It's more a case of "can we stop this? Right now? Plz? Before anyone else gets killed?"

[identity profile] dameruth.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If I was given semi-Godlike powers for a day, I'd move all the people out of the Middle East and then nuke the place into a glass parking lot.

"All right, that does it, *nobody* gets to live here."

Guess I have weird fantasies . . .

In Sheri Tepper The Fresco, the almost, but not quite God-like aliens, remove Jerusalem form the world. No one is harmed, but they don't hand it back until people learn to share.

I wish I could that right now.

Well good for you. Of course, Jerusalem is on the other side of Israel from Gaza and as run by Israel is an open city for muslims, Jews and Christians. Meanwhile, Gaza became Judenfrei three years ago and look what a bang up job that did for everyone concerned.

But nice of you to show your utter ignorance of world affairs.

[identity profile] marlowe1.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
If we could stop it before anyone else got killed then we would have stopped it. Of course, when people talk about stopping it, they are talking about stopping Israel from taking any military action. They aren't talking about Hamas trying to murder Israelis.

Sounds like he'd get on quite well with my MIL's boyfriend who's solution to the 'Aboriginal problem' is to "shoot them all".

You just impressed me hugely with your integrity, Kate. You've also inspired me to make sure my integrity and voice counts for something. Thank you for being such an awesome human being!

May the Gods and Orishas bless you with success, prosperity and great achievements alongside good health and wellbeing.

If you really want to be impressed, have a read of Jon's response to the whole mess.

I am impressed.

Indeed, very impressed!

I echo your gobsmackery (gobsmackitude?) -- not that someone (theoretically an educated, literate, creative someone) might believe that in this day, but that they'd say so.

[identity profile] marlowe1.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Or someone said that they are only worried about their friends on one side and don't really care about those people that have been trying to murder Israelis for generations. And then advocating that Gaza be cleared of Palestinians once and for all because the Hamas ruling class presents a danger that can't be negotiated with.

Of course, anyone that wants any military action must want to murder children.

Good on you. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest his armpits.

I was calling for their eviction from Gaza; an eviction that should have happened back in 1967 when it would have saved their lives. But of course you decided to read your own agenda into my remarks.

Thank you for being an idiot.

Is marlowe1 him? Deary me, how touchy. I wonder how he'd feel if told to leave his home because someone felt they had a better right to it....

[identity profile] murasaki-1966.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
My apologies Kate. I was silly and made a couple of ill-judged remarks and this sad person got upset. Sorry to bring bad manners to your blog.

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, the historically forced relocation of peoples has always gone swimmingly well!

/sarcasm

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading through Hamas' bloodthirsty dick-waving at the ADL site, the forcible eviction of the Jews from Israel (which they consider part of Palestine) appears to be their policy too: "We will continue until the very last usurper is driven out of our land." "By God, we will not leave one Jew in Palestine." and so on. GOLLY THE IRONY.

In spectacularly unrelated news, you has a Due South icon. Jon has just introduced me to the show and we're both enjoying it immensely.

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Men and their testosterone. Can't we just settle this with thumb-wrestling?

Oh, I have more than icons. I roleplay the Mountie. I hope you're enjoying it half as much as I do. ;)

(Talking of RP, you still need to bother my KITT-playing friend with your threatened Garth. She will die of squee.)
