Here you go: John Kerry's "terrorist attack on our democracy" (aka his 2004 Presidential run) was foiled by torturing him (and the American people) with those Swift Boat ads, wasn't it? Also caused John Edwards to cheat on his cancer-riddled wife, apparently. It's The Manchurian Candidate all over again, I tell you!
Cheney's logic does not resemble our Earth logic, by the way.
We can't get him to shut up. Delusional paranoia would be about right. Ironically we are seeing and hearing more of him now than we ever did the whole 8 years he was Veep.
Though, of course, if it did work, it would still be wrong. As Wanda Sykes said at the White House Press Association dinner, just claiming that its ok because it worked is like saying it was ok to rob that bank, because you really were able to pay off all your bills.
We hear so much about the ticking bomb scenario, and it's such a compelling idea: torture this one villain, or let innocents die. But until someone produces a real-world example, it's irrelevant to the debate, a Hollywood fantasy.
The other thing about the ticking time bomb scenario is it is not a justification for standard practice.
If you really are in such an extraordinary solution that you have a few minutes to save the lives of thousands or whatever, and for some reason you think torture is likely to actually help, then you should be prepared to break the law and hope for a pardon. But that scenario in no way justifies it as being part of standard practice.
You can come up with thought experiments to justify just about anything, if you imagine that a super-villain like the Dark Knights Joker who likes to set up elaborate contrived scenarios just to force you into a morally unreasonable position. But its nonsense to create the rules of engagement based on such fantasy scenarios.
