Dr. George Tiller

Why Clinic Violence is Obama's Problem

Op-ed calls for the federal US government to revive the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act and revive the National Task Force on Violence against Health Care Providers.

"Even if no national anti-choice group directly ordered [Dr Tiller's murderer] to fire that gun, he is a product of a culture that thrives on systematically threatening reproductive health care providers and women who seek abortions."

ETA: Info on Anti‐Choice Violence and Intimidation in the US, including attacks with firearms, bombs, arson, and chemicals, as well as stalking and hundreds and hundreds of threats. It's clear it would be a huge mistake to regard Tiller's murder as an isolated incident.

Plus! Here's a handy refresher on relevant scripture.

THIS. U.S. Marshals and security arrangements for those gyns who do provide abortion services is one thing in the short term, but there needs to be a better medium-to-long-term solution if future Tiller-alike-shootings are to be prevented.

Not sure if you can access it from outside the country, but MSNBC has some good commentary from Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann today. A lot of it focuses on how FOX and other right-wing news sources might be called complicit in Tiller's death, by helping to spread violent speech and encourage action against him.

Rachel Maddow
Keith Olbermann

Both have tickers of recent shows down the side of the screen.

One of Maddow's was really insightful -- she interviewed a lawyer and asked if legally this could be defined as terrorism. He wasn't sure, and seemed to think that terrorism requires more actual conspiring, rather than one party spewing borderline-inciteful speech and another party independently taking it upon himself to do violence. But he agreed that people like the guy who killed Tiller are falling through the cracks between freedom-of-speech laws and anti-terrorism laws.

Another view.

Until the 'churches' stop some of their bullshit, not a lot is going to change.

In 1973, most evangelicals regarded opposition to abortion as a Catholic Thing -- and therefore vaguely suspect, as though it might lead to praying to Mary or something.

That is an extremely interesting observation.
