Jan. 12th, 2006 07:09 pmThanks to HarrangueMan, I'm watching David Letterman wipe the floor with Bill O'Reilly (here's a transcript). There's a bit where O'Reilly pulls out a piece of paper - which makes you first think of McCarthy, then of chain emails - and claims a school changed the lyrics to Silent Night due to the spectre of Political Correctness that is haunting America. This is, of course, bullshit - meaning I doubt whether O'Reilly knew or cared whether it was true. Letterman suspects bullshit, but his response is even more powerful: he doesn't care. A bit of PC weirdness here and there does not a conspiracy make.
And that's just the first bit. *rubs hands together* I used to do this stuff on Usenet myself. It's delicious to see a professional with a huge audience doing it for real.
(To introduce the topic, O'Reilly says he had a good "winter solstice". This earns a bemused laugh; at least some audience members must have been visualising nudity and goats.)
ETA: More of O'Reilly's bullshit from the Letterman show: the banning of red and green in Texas.
