Genesis 25

Halfway mark!

- I think I'm starting to get an inkling of why the dispute over whether Ishmael or Isaac was the near-miss sacrificial victim is important: it's really a dispute over who's the first-born son and thus the rightful heir of Abraham. (Got a lift from a Uniting Church minister this evening who mentioned that many of these stories are also told in the Koran - must investigate.)

- Where is Shur? Is that Syria? (But then there are mentions of Syrians elsewhere, so I guess not.)

- Esau's hairiness reminds me of Enkidu. For no really very good reason. Moving swiftly on.

- I wonder if the story of the pottage recounts an actual business deal.

Shur is probably another name for Ur, one of the main cities along the tigris and euphrates rivers. Ur had a lot of names, a bit like San Francisco (SanFran, Frisco, City of Angels, etc). Sometimes, it was the capitol city. But I know that from one of my art history courses (it was on architecture) not bible study. *shrug*

Oh, I don't mind. It's nice knowing there's an actual answer, for a change. :) 'Sides which, I tangled up SF and LA, just like I tangle up lemons and onions (now there's a good one, eh).
