More random junk, as threatened

In the election hoo hah down here I missed the fact that the Marriage Protection Amendment died the death in the US. (Ta [livejournal.com profile] kelliem for that link.) This only doubles Australia's shame in actually having a law against gay marriage already. WTF is the point?! Cui bono for heavens sake? Employers and insurers, I suppose.

And speaking of employers, here's Entitlement and the Modern Fandom, and a big fuck you to the fanboys who reckon they're my employer. (Admittedly, I'm keen to read some of the alternative Marmadukes suggested, which only proves I'm a total New Adventures-befuddled pervert.)

I'm feeling a LOT of shame to be Australian just now.

Sigh.

WRT the marriage thing... I'm afraid it isn't really dead. It is, as the Miracle Max put it, just mostly dead. And mostly dead is a bit alive. I'm all but certain someone will reintroduce some variation of this bill, and keep reintroducing it until it gets passed, or the devil is playing ice hockey in hell, whichever comes first. Blargh.

WRT to the entitlement article... does Jon know about all the offers of free sex you've no doubt been getting from your die-hard fan base?

Jon reckons the marriage law was only intended as a sort of decoy - they knew they couldn't pass it, but wanted to identify the politicians in favour. I read online the rushed conscription law was a similar tactic, so they could kill it themselves! These people barely drink tea without a strategem.

I'm looking for ways Australia's law could be got off the books. We don't have a Bill of Rights, but there must be ways of challenging its legality. Must learn more about this.

As for the free sex, I took the first offer that presented itself. :-)

Gay marriage

My stance has always been: Just get rid of _all_ marriage benefits. Then there's nothing to fight over, and no one will care if you go out and marry that lovely oak tree, or whatever sets your heart a-flutter.

Mind you, without the right to import a spouse, Jon and I would be stuck on separate continents.

Ok, admittedly, I was not thinking beyond borders. But really, I get tired of seeing the "sanctity of marriage" being argued as precious by some guy on his third marriage and fourth affair.

I suppose I base my ideas of marriage on my parent's marriage: They've been married for 45 years. They're married for one reason: They love each other.

In my head, that's the only real reason there should be for qualifying for marriage: you love who (whom?) you're marrying.

All the rest is gravy.
