Professional street collectors for charities have really started to get on my tits. Here's why they've become so obnoxious: they keep a percentage. Obviously this method is working for charities or they wouldn't use it, but I'll keep my Walkman clamped to my head and seek other opportunities.

The hard part is telling the difference between the professionals who keep a percentage and the amateurs who are really just trying to help out what they see as a worthy cause.
I suppose you could ask, but how would you know you're getting an honest answer?
It's a sad thing when even charities are fraught with greed.
I suppose it does make sense for the charities, if they can't find enough volunteers, to enlist paid panhandlers. And maybe they've worked out that they get better returns if they offer a percentage than if they pay a flat per-hour rate. But it's still sad. Where have all the volunteers gone?

I saw a story about this on one of the pseudo-tabloid newsmagazine shows a few weeks or so back. Big problem in NYC at the moment...
