(no subject)

In late 1982 I was sitting in a car in Canberra, listening to 2xx, and heard a song that went like this:

This is the sound of God
This is the noise she makes

To this day, I haven't been able to find out a thing about the song or who sang it.

Some time about ten years ago I heard a song with the refrain "She can just lie", and I have the feeling that it was back-announced as being by "The Jackals", but I've never managed to confirm that, to find out anything more about the song or to obtain it. "The Jackals" seems to be such a likely title that dozens of bands with that name come and go each year. Alas.

There was definitely a WA (Perth?) band called The Jackals around in the late 80s, not sure how long for. The only single I remember was The Faint Aroma of Performing Seals - turned up on ABC a few times. (That's not the song you want tho'... not sure what their other releases were).

Tantalising. Thanks for the tip.

It sounds so familiar. At first I thought it just had to be Kate Bush, but then again, you didn't mention if it was male or female, and I looked up Kate's lyrics, and nothing there matches.

This place (http://www.lyrics.com/) seems to have some sort of lyric help thing, but you have to register.

Bugger bugger bugger - I know the song you mean, I can even hear it in my head just reading that. My mind makes strong associations with the XL Capris, Club of Rome & Bring Phillip - it's *not* any of them, but it's all circa IIRC.

Hell and damnation. I'll ask around, see if I can find someone who remembers. (*flashes Canberra Girl badge*)

I was definitely listening to lots of music back then (and we did get quite a bit of Australian music crossing the Tasman, not just Men At Work...) but the lyrics don't ring a bell.

However a few minutes' googling has brought up that there was a song called "Sound of God" by an Australian band called "Watusi Now" out about that time... I have never heard of the song or the band but do these names sound at all familiar to anyone?

Got a sample link here from the google search http://www.rarerecords.com.au/12inch/index.cfm?action=item&id=23239 (http://www.rarerecords.com.au/12inch/index.cfm?action=item&id=23239). Disclaimer: this is an example, not a recommendation; I know nothing about the vendor.

Grud that track listing takes me back. I think you've cracked it (and if it's not WN, it should be ;-D) Got an awful lot of bells ringing, anyway.

Heh. I've been fruitlessly trawling Oz Indie Rock sites for the last hour or so working on a nagging -- and clearly erroneous -- suspicion it had something to do with (someone to do with) Johanna Piggott (having disposed of Pel Mel, Particles and the like as possible suspects).

Feeling v.v. old now.

By George, I think you've got it! Early 80s Sydney indie band. Nice one!
