Picspam: Total Eclipse of the Heart

Choirboy seventeen, you are cleared to land!

The music video for Total Eclipse of the Heart, a showstopper written by Jim Steinman and sung by Bonnie Tyler, is the erotic nightmare of a lady teacher at a boy's school. Images of innocence, such as the little boy with the dove, are contrasted with the unavoidable sexual atmosphere of young men fencing, swimming, playing football, etc. It's all a bit romance novel, and the "bright eyes" line has been rather overinterpreted, but it's straightforward enough (plus it's extremely unusual in that men rather than women are placed on MTV display).

Then the Arab ninjas arrive:

(You may not be able to make them out very well. The video-to-DVD transfer I rented is appalling.)

It all gets increasingly overblown after this. A glowing-eyed choirboy flies at us on a Kirby wire. Barbarians in furry pants torment Bonnie with their writhings. Some rather beautiful images get a bit lost in the mix, such as a costume that fuses the dove with the barbarian.

Gasp! She is haunted by her nightmare even in daylight. (That looks like FAP tape to me, the familiar glowing effect from numerous episodes of Doctor Who.)

Youth and beauty: not always synonyms.

(Australia! You're Standing In It did a great parody of this video, in which everyone ends up with the glowing eyes, including the video's insane producer.)

Thank you Kate. I've always wondered what that clip was about. My, I was innocent back in my Countdown days.

And when is Australia, you're standing in it going to make it to DVD?

My, I was innocent back in my Countdown days.

Me too. None of this would have occurred to me then! I think I just found the boys vaguely menacing.

And when is Australia, you're standing in it going to make it to DVD

The sooner the better - and complete, I hope!

Oh good. I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I'm amazed how much of this went over my head. I know I'm short, but really....

This looked too weird to be missed, so I looked it up on YouTube, and right enough, they have it:

(By the way: FAP tape? Is that an acronym for something?)

Sad but true: I know the answer

And now you need to read this.

Sheer brilliance, including the discussion. "I always thought it was what happened when Victoria's Secret decided to shoot a commercial at a boy's prep school on the same day that the aliens took over."

This will either make you laugh or slap me, but for some reason, the caps of that video made me think of "The Room with No Doors".

Maybe because Arab ninjas would have fit in perfectly in the book, and been FREAKIN' AWESOME.

and maybe a unicorn too.
