(no subject)

I wish I could feel undiluted delight and relief at the apparent foiling of a plot to commit mass murder. I no longer trust the people who are supposed to be protecting us not to break the law, not to target innocents, and not to lie.

I hope this drama doesn't bury a good deed shining in a weary world: the rebellion of a number of Liberal backbenchers against the latest anti-refugee Bill, which would have sent all asylum seekers arriving without visas to the hellish camp on Nauru.

Unfortunately it still passed.

*sigh*

I don't understand people, I really don't. And yes, you're right, I shouldn't let the anger at it passing overwhelm the admiration for those MPs with enough empathy and courage to get up and show themselves.

It isn't law yet. It has to pass the Senate next week, and the way things are shaping up, it could fail there. Of course, the Govt. will do a deal with the Family First Senator (who seems to lack backbone when it's needed) and the nasty thing will pass. The Opposition would have my vote immeadiately if they would promise to revoke all such demeaning acts and close down the detention centres as soon as they get into office.

I forgot to add: if you want to help, contact Senator Steve Fielding (Family First) at senator.fielding@aph.gov.au and let him know how you feel about this. Also contact your state senators and let them know (check for them on this site: http://www.aph.gov.au/Senate/senators/index.htm)

Yeah, I had the same cynical thought. After so many 'foiled attempts' that turned out to be either vastly exaggerated or the cops lying about their own fuckups, I kind of assume they are lying from the first these days.

I wish I could just cheer.

Depressing amounts of misinformation and spin-doctoring abound.

::le sigh::

Agreed on both counts.

The real truth of the situation will be hopelessly obliterated by another season of security theatre.

But its nice to know all members of the Liberal party are not devoid of a conscience.
