Invented families

Quoth RTD re SJA: "What I've often done is to construct invented families where the bonds are better than natural ones." I love this - it's Teh Game to a tee, and I think it's what I'm trying to do in Quiet Game.

what an interesting article. i have noticed that about davies's work, and i did wonder if it was a gay writer thing...at this point i kind of think it is, but only because people with alternative sexualities might statistically have more of a reason to feel a disconnect with biological families, sad to say.

that said, it's not something that's exclusive to the gay community by any means...charlie chaplin comes to mind as a notable straight writer who used the theme of 'chosen' families a lot in his work.

It's a very strong theme in Joss Whedon's work as well - all three of his television series deal with the notion of the created family. It's most explicit in Buffy, though.
