YAOWP is an piece for Chicks Dig Time Lords, a collection of essays on women, fandom, and Doctor Who from Mad Norwegian Press, due to be published later this year.
Specifically, it's a reminiscence about my time in Australian fandom, then online fandom, and about being one of the few women writing for the NAs/EDAs. For the most part, writing it has been like chewing on glass. All those years as the token woman, and yet, I have never felt so isolated from fandom as I have recently. Every few years, I go through a phase with fandom where all I can see is the ugliness and obsession and overentitlement, and it's become hard to see the cameraderie and creativity. (Although the sense of fun is alive and well on
