The Flamingo Flame ... ?
Hee hee hee. I have Gatchman vol 1 and it's got awful English subtitles. (Not that you can't largely follow the story without them.) I'm currently watching The Phantom Boat From The Hell and wondering why the heck so much entirely innocent animation (Princess and Keyop Jun and Jinpei waterskiing, Jason Joe looking cool in shades, etc) was lopped out in favour of 7-fucking-Zark-7.

Mr. September
Re: Mr. September
He's got that, "I'm too sexy for your dub." look :)
Oooh maybe it was the semi-bikini trunks he's wearing? I mean that would certainly be worthy of a sensor right? I mean he has that Italian beach bum look.

As I recall, the ping pong game was badly animated too! I mean, even as a 11 year old, I could tell it was a different set of animators that made that horrific piece of stock footage! :)

My take? Fear of censorship, worries over "too adult" storylines, and the aforementioned attempts to capitalize on "robots are cool!" stuff. Kids programming in those days was dire. They were still trying to break into a market that clung to the "cartoons are only for kids" mentality, and the people in power were the same idiots who thought the comics code was the best thing ever.
I have the first four seasons of that show and I find that due to poor subtitles, it's actually tougher to watch than it should be. The stories, while amusingly dated, are actually pretty good stuff and the show is better than I remembered in many ways.

I've been experimenting with switching off the subtitles and just watching the damn thing in Japanese!
