1. Historically, there has been a lack of redheads, and in particular redheads with freckles, represented in mainstream media. Many of us grew up without 'evidence' that we were considered attractive. This is a similarity between being a PoC and being a redhead.
I'm sure I read something when David Caruso was in the process of leaving (or being thrown out of depending on what you read) NYPD blue about how he would have trouble finding more parts, or making a go of a film career, because he was a red-head. It was too long ago for it to be likely I'd find the article on the net (even if I could remember where I read it). I think there was some bizarre technical explanation attached (his hair would cause flare? or clash with something or other?). I remember it because it was the first time it occured to me that he was red-haired. My father has red-green colour-blindness and I seem to have a very mild form of the same (although my genetics background would suggest otherwise) - at any rate I often see certain shades of red as brown. I always thought Willow in Buffy had brown hair until someone described her on screen as a red-head. At any rate, it suggests there was some sort of prejudice, possibly with a post-facto technical justification, doing the rounds in visual media.
