This is in no way restricted to fandom, as you know. And nothing much has changed in online debate, except, perhaps, that the dubious techniques of online debate are more current in mainstream politics.
In the current internet censorship debate it appears a lot of the 'research' being cited is an inaccurate off the cuff estimate by somone several years ago, that then gets repeated by others, sometime even though they've been told it has no basis http://libertus.net/censor/resources/statistics-laundering.html
