The researchers address this, discussing different patterns of physical aggression in male and female mammals. For example, female rats will attack stranger rats when they are pregnant or nursing, but this behaviour quickly fades as the offspring mature. The authors suggest that physical aggression by females tends to be limited to situations requiring defence, while males are physically aggressive in a broader range of situations.
