SPOILERS for Children of Earth
Right. These Hysterical Woman #959 etc icons. RTD's dodgy remark is fair game, but the icons are misleading: there aren't nine hundred women who've signed up to be counted as "hysterical". Rather, someone took the membership list of
savecoffeeboy and assigned numbers to every username, in alphabetical order (and later, in the order they joined the comm). It may be unintentional, but it looks like another effort to make the campaign look bigger than it is.
Still, nearly a thousand members is a pretty healthy size for a campaign. Or it would be if more than 128 of them (as of 3 August) had reported actually contacting the BBC. The membership of the comm runs from the sweet and sane to the vicious and barking, from the vigorous protester to the merely casually interested. They shouldn't be conflated, by lazy journalists, by the rest of fandom, nor by the campaigners themselves.
The campaign has brought one of fandom's perennial debates - the relationship between slash and actual gay men - sharply into focus. Some pertinent (and hilarious) remarks on the subject at Television Without Pity.
And now, for light relief:
lolarious macros. (I still don't get #13, though.)
Keith Topping: RTD Caused Global Warming. (From 2007!) "RTD ate more leaves than he should, causing other giraffes to die."
ETA: Meant to mention that someone's posted photos of some of the tributes left at the "Hub" in Cardiff, which include a sweet letter laboriously pencilled by a child "Ianto Ianto come back come back come back!" and signed (in an adult hand, with tongue-in-cheek, I suspect) "Love, Owen"; and a note which says, "Dear Torchwood, the chemicals ARE GOOD. - 456"
