I agree that this is the policy that should have been implemented in the first place.
I predict that the Opposition will smear the Government as having surrendered; that a spike in maritime arrivals will follow; and that the Opposition will use the spike to make the Government bleed. That doesn't bear on the ethics of the policy, merely on its political cost, particularly with what has led up to this moment.
I do not predict Australia disappearing under a wave of asylum seekers; but you'll be hearing a lot more about it in the media.
