Rape Music III
May. 29th, 2004 03:11 pmIt's very difficult to be offended by AC DC's 1980 album Back in Black as it's all so cheerfully, naughtily adolescent. Hell's Bells sounds very oo-er devil worship unless you know that the title is a comical Australian expression of mild dismay. And you can just imagine the pimply boasting that generated the lyrics. "My dick's like a knife." "Yeah, well, my dick's like a gun!!" "Well my dick's like a cannon!!!" etc. Still, there's something slightly worrying about young men growing up to the accompaniment of lyrics such as
Don't you struggle
Don't you fight
Don't you worry
'Cause it's your turn tonight
or
I'm gonna shoot you down yeah yeah
I'm gonna get you down
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Shoot you, shoot you, shoot you, shoot you down
Shoot you, shoot you, shoot you down
I saw TV doco in which one of AC DC explained that Night Prowler (from Highway To Hell) was only about sneaking into your girlfriend's house when her parents were asleep. Listeners are excused if they can't deduce that meaning from the lyrics. One hopes the youths listening to Shoot to Thrill grasped the innuendo.
