Sep. 21st, 2004 02:25 pmFast forwarded through the Beeb Romeo and Juliet and watched the big fight scene where Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo kills Tybalt. It was ripping. The Prince has banned street fighting on pain of death, so Tybalt and Romeo just trade witty quips; they know how to play this game of chicken, but Mercutio doesn't. Tybalt keeps trying to break off the fight and Mercutio starts it up again. Both of them swiftly get tired, which is something forgotten about in a lot of screen battles. In fact, the younger and probably less experienced Romeo might not have been able to dispatch Tybalt if the latter hadn't been knackered. Rickman manages to look fantastic even in piebald pastel tights. Mercutio calls him "king of cats", which is perfect. I must look up if the bit about minstrels means what I think it does. [Google Google nope.]
If you have the chance to listen to PDQ Bach's destruction the first movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor, do so. It has a sports commentary. "He's playing a cadenza! He's out of his mind! He thinks it's an oboe concerto!!!"
