The unhappy
childfree doesn't let outsiders post - no surprise - so I thought I'd post this here instead. It was meant as a response to someone who was outraged at children under five being brought to a funeral.

One of the most lovely sounds I've ever heard was a couple of kids crying and running around at the back of my friend's dad's funeral. At first I was a little annoyed. Then I realised I was listening to the sound of the future, the sound of hope, the sound of family and community. It did my heart good.

When your sibs start producing kids, it makes you think all right... one weird side effect was that I wandered off to take a look at the
Voluntary Human Extinction Movement site. Unlike the miserable aforementioned community, it's a surprisingly gentle, reasonable place - although it's very difficult to work out to what extent they've got their tongue in their cheek. Importantly to me, they acknowledge the West's disproportionate use of the world's resources, although they miss the opportunity to point this out as an extra reason for Westerners not to have kids. They have a list of
reasons to breed and counterarguments, which I found worth thinking about. My question is: how many of those reasons and counterarguments are actually involved in peoples' decisions to have children, or not have children?
