Nov. 8th, 2005 10:43 amShouldn't I be cheering at the news that police say they've foiled a major terrorist attack?
Is it just dumb pride - I don't want to admit I was wrong when I mocked Howard's rushed legislation? Or have I become so cynical, after being lied to so often, that I can't even feel natural relief, gratitude, and anger?
The thing is, I would have been reading those happy headlines with or without Howard's panic recall of the Senate. No-one's been charged with planning an actual attack - only for membership in a banned organisation. (Of course, this may change.) The NSW Police Commissioner said the amendment was "useful" in the raids. Not crucial, or necessary.
Howard will of course take credit and say he's been proved right. Rain will come at sunset, so let's do the sacrifice then.
