In my search for an oat bran muffin recipe I was assaulted by stupid diet ads. One boasted of the shrinkage of a perfectly healthy and attractive woman from size 14 to size 6 (results not typical, thank gods), with this illustration:

A few entires back I talked about how in media images women are swivelled to make their breasts and bottoms look larger. In this case, as in all diet ads, similar tricks are used. The "before" images are as unflattering as possible - often they're an amateur polaroid - unsmiling, without makeup or coiffed hair, front-on to make the body look wider. In this case, the subject's arms are clamped to her sides to make her breasts look smaller. Compare the "after" image: she's properly lit; she's turned to make her look thinner than she is; she's been dolled up and has a big smile; her arms are akimbo to lift and enlarge her breasts (and a contrasting bikini colour also draws attention to them). Gods only know what else has been done in Photoshop.

It occurs to me that given the benefit of a professional photography team, every woman could look stunningly attractive in their own unique way. Hell, I've seen gorgeous pro photos of a model whose face was slashed by an attacker, and of a woman with a rose tattooed over the scar where her left breast was. What a shame we so seldom get to see anyone except the amazing Results Not Typical woman.
