Recent magazine finds
Apr. 6th, 2006 10:29 pmAustralian Natural History, 15 March, 1963 (3 s). Highlights include Deep-Sea Prawns - their Colour and Luminescence and Rare Whale Washed Up on Sydney Beach. But I stole grabbed this from a waiting room because of the lead article, The Origin of Life, which given the magazine's age was written not long after the event. RNA isn't mentioned, nor weird-ass bacteria such as thermophiles - the meat of modern articles about abiogenesis.
Omni, July 1987 ($3). The cover folds out into a three page Marlboro ad with threegay cowboys. One-page ads feature the US Committee for Energy Awareness, aka the nuclear industry, CompuServe, and Star Trek on videocassette - and condoms. It was mostly the ads that amused me, but there's also an alarmingly serious column written by a judge of the Supreme Court, State of New York, on incorporating psychic evidence into the courtroom.
