Its teaching is concentrated on an intuitive experience, and the intellectual content of this experience can be supplied by a system of thought not necessarily Buddhistic. If the masters find it more expedient for some reason, they may build up their own philosophical structure not always in accordance with the traditional interpretation. Zen Buddhists are sometimes Confucianists, sometimes Taoists, or sometimes even Shintoists; Zen experience can also be explained by Western philosophy."

I read that passage last night, and felt a lot better about my own beliefs, a muddle of Zen and Neo-Paganism. I still carry the leftover idea that one must be one or the other.
