In the gym change room just now, I caught a bit of 60 Minutes on Guantanamo Bay. As you're probably aware, Australian David Hicks has been held there without charge or trial for 5 years, the last 2 of them in solitary confinement. Channel 9 was not allowed to interview David Hicks since "it would not be in the spirit of the Geneva Convention" and would "violate his human rights". They are referring to the Geneva Convention's prohibition of exposing POWs to public curiosity.
I was thinking the other day that something wishy-washy liberals like me must have in common with conservatives is a respect for the rules: for the laws and treaties that apply, at least in principle, to every citizen and to every human being. A lot of people way to my right must share my frustration and anger when "democratic" governments break their agreements and promises, and worse, twist the law like this to cover their arses.
Next stop Baxter Detention Centre, Channel 9?
