I've posted a shedload of depressing stuff in the last few days, so let's have a few laughs to keep ourselves human.

Go here and scroll down to the scribbly comic that starts, "Sigh..." This in itself is pretty hilarious, but it was the following comment by "Death talon" that got me. :-)

Trying to track down the one issue we had as kids, I found a whole gallery of 1970s Ghost Rider covers. Sometimes he fights the Orb, a baddie whose head is a giant eyeball. I'm dying to see the rest of his bad guy team - the Nose, the Ear, etc. Satan also makes quite a lot of appearances, apparently not rating his own title.

Christopher Eccleston appreciates his cross stitch.

From my scrapbooks. Neither of my brothers will admit to being the artist!

I'm still struggling to articulate this even to myself, but I think what I'm trying to say about the whole issue of the West and Islam and feminism is this:

Our thinking tends to fall into Us vs Them, the West vs Islam.

Women tend to be used, by both sides, as a weapon in that Us vs Them thinking.

The danger is that We become complacent about Our culture, while feeling free to do anything to Them, our implacable, immoral enemies.

But:

We do not have to choose one side, nor choose one side over the other.

Acknowledging Muslim diversity (nations, cultures, beliefs, politics) and Islamic feminism is one way to avoid this dangerous Us vs Them thinking.

You can criticise sexism in Islam and still fight Islamophobia.

There's a quote in a National Geographic somewhere which I must find again, from a doctor working in the Middle East: "When an Israeli is hurt, I am an Israeli, and when a Palestinian is hurt, I am a Palestinian". Man I wish I pwned 1/100th as much as that.
