"A few years ago, a Muslim scientist working at the pole was confronted with the problem of how to observe Ramadan - a month-long ritual that requires fasting during the hours of daylight - at a place where the sun never sets. The problem was solved when he patched a call through to a cleric in Christchurch who gave him dispensation to use New Zealand's sunrise and sunset times. Since Ramadan traditionally ends with feasting amongst family and friends, the US Antarctic Program flew him back to McMurdo for a few days so he could use the telephones for a talkfest with his relatives."
- Roff Smith, Life on the Ice (p 92)
