Stumbled across a Web site which proclaims: "Evolution has a major negative impact on society. Please fight it. Find an alternative." (Erm... genetic engineering?)
Part of the site's argument: the miraculous properties of iron, without which we wouldn't have steel-reinforced concrete (it can't be a concidence that the type of steel used to reinforce concrete expands at the same rate as concrete!), car engines, and loudspeakers. In fact, if you ask me, it's surprising the Bible doesn't make more of these technological necessities. (Of rust, the site notes, and I quote: "There is probably a benefit to this feature, but the author cannot think of one at present.") Moreover: "Where would civilization be today without the plough, axe and saw?" I mean, what other metals could you possibly make those tools from?
The writer has an honours degree in physics and teaches the subject in high school.
What I'm actually trying to work out is whether you could make a battery before the iron age.
