"I devoted a day to the revision of the text, but having much under-estimated its height above the ground, I was not able to get level with the top of the lines and copied them in great discomfort, although I obtained the longest ladder the village could produce and lashed it to the top of my own. After this delay the day proved scarcely sufficient for the task. I returned another day and tried to revise certain passages with the help of field-glasses, but found this method quite unsatisfactory."
