Merciful Sekhmet has largely lifted her paw off me. My relief and gratitude are indescribable. Must remember the effective combination of (non-drowsy) cough syrup, air conditioning, and tranks for next time.

At midnight, my solemn vow to Bastet and Seshat not to buy more books runs out. I may go a little berserk. The ladies have more than held up their end of the bargain: Frankus is taking up most of my desk as I type this, and didn't just survive his surgery (for which my oath helped pay) but is back to his ornery, obnoxious, cuddly, and thoroughly happy self.

So, as we prepare to bid a fond farewell to 2010, I'd like just like to out-nerd the lot of you.

In Asterix and Cleopatra there's a panel where a baddie, interrogated forcefully by Obelix, gabbles a whole bunch of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Unlike most of the 'Egyptian' in the book, it's a real passage, copied out carefully enough by Albert Uderzo that, for a lark, I am attempting to translate it.

Whatever you're doing this fine New Year's Eve, it cannot possibly be as gleefully pointless as what I'm doing.
