Together, they fight crime!
Mar. 6th, 2012 07:18 pmSo far, the only reasonable arguments I've seen against the casting of Lucy Liu as Joan Watson in CBS' forthcoming Elementary are (a) the "blokey", "bromance" appeal will be lost, and (b) Liu should have been cast as Holmes.
I may have to write that threatened ficin my copious spare time - in which Doctor Jin Watson is made to "take a bullet" for her VA hospital after the mysterious death of a patient, only her steady boyfriend Morrie believes her that it wasn't her fault, and only her quirky new neighbour Sherlock Holmes can prove it was really *dramatic V/O* MURDER - if she can keep him clean long enough to solve the case.
There - that outline, which took me less than a minute to think of, fits the handful of hints in the press just as well as any rant I've seen so far. (Right now we know so little that the show could be anything from a gritty police procedural to an action romcom with gags about the difference between "pants" and "trousers".)
To be fair, TV generally displays even less imagination than fandom does. I'm not exactly holding my breath for this show to break exciting fresh ground in televisual storytelling. But hell, I would love to see a blokey bromance between a man and a woman. It would only require someone somewhere to drop their assumptions and give it a try.
