I might do a round-up of recent refugee news later, so, before I darken your skies with all of that, some good news which I have just discovered and which has me reeling with surprise and glee. In response to the deluge of rape and murder threats Tweeted at Caroline Criado-Perez for campaigning to have Jane Austen placed on the £10 note, and at supporters including British MP UK Stella Creasy, police have arrested two men. It doesn't sound like much in the face of literally hundreds of thousands of threats, but I can't put it better than the blogger who called it "so cathartic I might have it drawn on top of a cake and then have sex with it". In an interview, Creasy remarked, "What we mustn't do is make the mistake of thinking that because this is happening online it is somehow less serious."
In stating the simple and obvious truth, Caroline Criado-Perez is describing the world where I hope my nieces will one day live: "I'm hoping that if enough arrests are made, and if the justice system deals with this properly, then hopefully that's going to start sending out a really strong message that the laws of the land will be applied. The things that are being sent to me are illegal. It's not legal to send people death threats and rape threats. We have the laws. I really hope they're going to be applied to the full extent in this case so that no other woman has to go through this again."
(I'm going to see if I can find out what effect the arrests had on the rate of threats of violence.)
