Weekly refugee links
Jan. 5th, 2014 10:14 amYou may recall that in October last year, violence erupted between the PNG army and the police squad employed to secure the outer perimeter of the Manus Island detention centre. More details have come to light. Guns were drawn, shots were fired, and general chaos broke out as G4S security inside the centre failed to cope. Australian staff were evacuated; local staff and asylum seekers were left behind. The centre has caused bitter local disputes; the impression is that it was was under assault by armed military personnel.
An Amnesty spokesperson describes general conditions on Manus Island: horrific thirst, roasting heat, stink, boredom, humiliation, and madness. This is not neglect, but an intentional effort to break refugees so they'll go home; it is, in short, torture.
Police are investigating a reported rape at the Christmas Island detention centre.
In the past week, one boat arrived near Melville Island, carrying 40-50 people. (Mr Morrison did not hold a press conference, but issued a report via email.)
