Refugee Update: Manus Island
Sep. 4th, 2014 12:59 pm24-year-old Iranian asylum seeker Hamid Kehazaei, held on Manus Island, has been declared brain dead in hospital after reportedly being denied treatment for an infected wound. (There's a candlelit vigil tonight at 5.30 at Sydney's Town Hall.)
Security reports leaked from Manus describe a constant state of violence, including fights between detainees, between detainees and guards, self-harm, and suicide attempts. They also mention the use of solitary confinement as a punishment for troublesome detainees.
On August 19, two Papua New Guineans were arrested and charged in connection with the murder of Reza Berati. As of August 21, the Australian Federal Police had not been asked by their Papua New Guinean counterparts to help with tracing suspects in Australia.
Mercifully, no more asylum seekers will be sent to Manus Island. But what about the poor bastards who are still there?
