Meanwhile on Nauru
Aug. 20th, 2015 07:46 pmSign the Greens' petition against the renewal of contracts for Transfield Services and their contractor Wilson Security.
Spying and abuse described by Nauru detention centre's former staff (7:30, ABC, 14 August). They describe guards turning up to work drunk and a policy of understating the use of force in reports, as well as contradicting Wilson Security claims about regular breath-testing and a well-publicised whistleblower hotline. Video from the centre includes a guard joking about shooting a detainee.
Nauru asylum seeker rape victim refused medical treatment in Australia, family says (ABC, 14 August) ETA: Thankfully, she is now being brought to Australia for treatment. ETA again: Allegedly, she was left half-naked and distraught in the back of a police vehicle for three-quarters of an hour while they enjoyed a fireworks show. Despite her injuries, Nauruan police believed she was lying about the assault.
Sting allegedly captures security guard in Nauru detention camp confessing to fake assault story. "The guard said he wanted the asylum seeker convicted so he would never be settled in Australia... The asylum seeker... spent one month in jail for the alleged assault and tried to kill himself at least three times after being falsely accused – once almost successfully hanging himself... Wilson [Security] kept the alleged fabrication hidden from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, raising concern that potentially criminal behaviour is occurring in taxpayer-funded offshore camps without government knowledge." (With plausible deniability, in other words.)
A former guard has testified that he has heard of torture being used at the centre, including waterboarding, but conceded that he had not personally witnessed it.
Commonwealth sued over 'negligence' of 5yo asylum seeker who lived on Nauru. She suffers PTSD, severe depression and anxiety, incontinence, and is at risk of self-harm.
