Refugee Update
Feb. 7th, 2016 11:18 amPremier Daniel Andrews tells Malcolm Turnbull that Victoria will take asylum seekers (The Age, 6 February 2016): Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has written to the Prime Minister offering to 'accept full responsibility' for the asylum seekers who face being sent back to the remote island of Nauru in the wake of this week's High Court decision. In a letter to Malcolm Turnbull – posted on Mr Andrews' Facebook page and Twitter account on Saturday – the Labor premier told the Prime Minister that Victoria would gladly take on the families and children rather than have them return to 'a life of physical and emotional trauma' in immigration detention."
NSW Government 'prepared to help' with Nauru asylum seekers if Canberra asks (ABC, 7 February 2016) I thought this was a bit wet until I remember that Daniels is ALP and Baird is a Lib.
There are hundreds of bookmarks in my browser that I have never managed to post. Here are a few.
Asylum seekers – is there a better way? (SMH, 30 January 2016) Large-scale, long-term, international solutions are needed to get refugees to safety. Those solutions are being worked out, and Australia needs to commit to being a part of them.
Why did Fazel Chegeni Nejad have to die? (ABC, 28 January 2016): "Late last year Iranian refugee Fazel Chegeni was found dead outside the perimeter fence of the Christmas Island detention facility. Chegeni, whose claim for refugee status had been accepted by Australian authorities, had been brutally tortured by the Iranian regime, and was mentally ill. So why did he spend his last thousand days in detention?"
Australia stops boats but not criticism (Budapest Times, 24 January 2016) "Hungary has been in international headlines for months over the government’s hardline policy on migrants, but is not alone in rejecting asylum seekers. On the opposite side of the globe is a country on top of the human development index, with utopian unemployment rates and economic stability. And Australia also has a similar track record on the processing of asylum seekers... Even Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán remains unimpressed. In October he slammed Australia for not doing its job to stem the flow of migrants." Our selfishness and lawlessness is an excuse for others.
