The ban on boat arrivals would probably violate the Refugee Convention. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton's claim that the new laws are needed to prevent the use of spousal visas based on "sham relationships" has been described as 'frankly ludicrous', with tens of thousands of applications already being checked each year under existing law.
Manus Island detainee tries to exit 'hell' - by attempting to set himself alight (SMH, 5 November 2016) Fortunately he was rescued by another detainee. Given they can't even treat his psoriasis properly, a death by burns would be as unimaginably horrific as it was for Omid Masoumali on Nauru.
