I'd be interested in your take on The Melancholy of Haruhi Sazumiya - Haruhi is not a passive character (as she's the main driver of the plots, whether consciously or not) but she does deliberately recruit girls to her club that match anime/manga stereotypes - though that's deliberate on her part too (e.g It isn't a high school club without a Moe - so she finds one.) The un-named male protagonist is the passive character - but then the whole things seems a meta-commentary on these kind of tropes in Japanese popular culture.
